Hyphens and spaces: declare the name-number preprocessing rule

Does a hyphen change a name number? There is no useful answer until the method states what it does with punctuation and spaces. This worksheet compares two written forms under one explicit teaching rule. It is about transparent preprocessing, not a recommendation to alter a real name or a claim that punctuation determines someone's opportunities.

Write the rule before entering the name

For this example, retain the letters A–Z, ignore spaces and hyphens, and use the repeating 1–9 Pythagorean-style table. Under that rule, the teaching strings A-B and AB both become the letter sequence AB. A contributes 1 and B contributes 2, so both produce an unreduced total of 3.

The result follows because the declared rule gives punctuation no numeric value. It would be misleading to announce that hyphens never matter in numerology without specifying the method. Another scheme could define a different treatment; it would need to state and apply that treatment consistently.

Preserve the original spelling alongside the working

Ignoring a character for an arithmetic exercise does not mean deleting it from the person's display name. Keep the original written form, the processed letter sequence and the value list in separate fields. That makes the transformation visible without promoting the processed version into a supposedly more correct identity.

W3C's guidance on personal names describes the variety of name structures used around the world. A space or a hyphen can have ordinary linguistic and personal significance even when a particular teaching calculation ignores it. Respecting that distinction is part of using the worksheet responsibly.

Compare a change that actually affects letters

Now compare AB with ACB under the same table. The second sequence contains an additional C, worth 3, so its total is 1 + 3 + 2 = 6. This differs from removing a hyphen: the letter sequence itself changed. Label those two kinds of edits separately when reviewing screenshots.

Do not claim that a different total proves that one spelling should be adopted. A name choice can involve family, culture, preference and practical records. A symbolic arithmetic exercise does not replace those considerations or justify pressuring somebody to change a name they value.

Ask for the working when totals differ

A useful comparison includes the original name, the declared preprocessing rule, the resulting letters and the sum. If one of those is missing, the final digit is not enough to diagnose the difference. Clear working turns a vague disagreement into an answerable question while keeping the person's actual name intact.
